In the autumn of 1944, World War II was entering its
final phase. At long last, Americans could begin to look to
the horizon.
In Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma College of
Medicine asked a group of alumni to do just that. The college
assembled a blue-ribbon panel of physicians who’d trained
at OU and tasked them with identifying projects worthy of
support from the school’s alumni association.
The physicians were practitioners, people who’d spent their
lives battling sickness and disease on the front lines. But as
they fought day after day to repel the same scourges – cancer,
heart disease, influenza, tuberculosis – they recognized it was
not enough simply to treat the sick. To make real headway
against disease, they realized, medicine had to do more.
That meant pinpointing the root causes of illnesses.
Discovering new ways to treat deadly conditions. Searching
out ways to prevent sickness before it ever took hold.
The doctors imagined a standalone institution where
physicians and scientists could have a singular focus:
medical research. To do that, they’d need to be free of
other obligations. That meant no students to teach. Few
administrative responsibilities. And patient treatment only
where clinical care advanced research.
The physicians drew up a blueprint for just such a place.
The college’s alumni association loved the idea. Even though
it would exist separately from OU, a new research institute
would “enhance the prestige of the University of Oklahoma,”
supporters would later write. A standalone organization
focused on laboratory science would “relieve the present acute
shortage” of physicians in the state by attracting qualified
researchers “and offering research opportunities to the
members of the medical profession.”
The result was the birth of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
This is the story.
